Search a question on Google today and there is a good chance the first thing you see is not a list of links. It is a generated summary that answers the question directly, with a few source links beside it.

Those summaries are Google AI Overviews, and for many businesses they have changed how much traffic a ranking is worth. This guide explains what AI Overviews and AI Mode are, how Google picks the sources it shows, what published research says about clicks, and what you should do in response. It is part of our complete AI SEO guide.

What are Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?

AI Overviews are AI generated summaries that appear at the top of some Google search results. They answer the query in a few paragraphs or bullet points and show links to the pages the answer draws on. They appear only when Google's systems judge that a summary adds value beyond the regular results, so many searches still show no overview at all.

AI Mode is a separate, conversational search experience inside Google. It handles longer, more complex questions and follow ups. Google says both features may run several related searches behind the scenes, a technique it calls query fan out, which means they can surface a wider set of pages than a single classic search.

AI Overviews AI Mode
Where it appears Above regular results on some searches A separate tab or mode in Google Search
When it appears Only when Google judges it helpful When the user chooses it
Format A short summary with source links A conversation with follow up questions and links
Effect on regular results Pushes them further down the page Replaces them for that session
Comparison of a Google AI Overview above regular results and a conversational AI Mode session with follow up questions
AI Overviews summarise above the regular results; AI Mode replaces them with a conversation.

Are Google AI Overviews available in India?

Yes. Google launched AI Overviews in India in August 2024, in English and Hindi. AI Mode rolled out to everyone in India in English in July 2025, after a Search Labs test, and Hindi support followed later that year. In October 2025 Google added seven more Indian languages to AI Mode: Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.

For Indian businesses, that means AI summaries now reach buyers searching in English, Hindi and several regional languages.

How Google chooses sources for AI Overviews

Google's documentation for site owners is unusually clear on this. It states that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimisation is needed. To be eligible, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Google also says you do not need new machine readable files, AI text files or special schema markup to appear.

That matters, because many tools now sell files and markup "for AI". For Google, the requirements match regular search. We explain the separate question of llms.txt in what llms.txt actually does.

Google's recommended practices for AI features are the familiar SEO fundamentals:

  • Allow crawling in robots.txt and in any CDN or hosting settings
  • Link to important content from other pages on your site
  • Provide a good page experience on mobile and desktop
  • Keep important content in text, supported by quality images and video
  • Keep structured data consistent with the visible text on the page
  • Keep Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date

If your site has crawl or indexation problems, fix those first. Our technical SEO checklist covers what to check.

How Google AI Overviews affect clicks

This is where most of the concern sits, and the published data does show a real effect on informational searches.

Pew Research Center, July 2025. Pew analysed the browsing behaviour of 900 adults in the United States. When an AI summary appeared, users clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no summary appeared. Users clicked a link inside the summary itself on only 1% of visits.

Ahrefs, 2025 and 2026. In April 2025, Ahrefs reported that AI Overviews were associated with a 34.5% lower click through rate for the top ranking page. A follow up study of 300,000 keywords, comparing December 2025 with December 2023, put the reduction for the top result on informational keywords with AI Overviews at around 58%.

Two cautions apply. Most of this research uses US data, and click behaviour in India may differ. And Google argues that clicks from AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, meaning visitors who click are more likely to engage.

The effect is not the same for every kind of search. Based on what we see across client accounts:

Query type Example Likelihood of an AI Overview Typical traffic effect
Simple informational "what is a drone light show" High Large drop in clicks
Detailed how to "how to plan a drone show for a wedding" High Moderate drop, deep guides still earn clicks
Commercial research "drone show companies in Jaipur" Lower Smaller effect, comparisons still get visited
Transactional "book drone show for corporate event" Low Little effect
Local "interior designer near me" Low Map results still dominate

Simple informational searches lose the most clicks; transactional and local searches are least affected.

Which content loses and which holds up

Content that loses the most answers a simple question that can be summarised in a few lines: definitions, quick facts, short explainers and basic how to articles. If the summary fully answers the question, many searchers do not need to click.

Content that holds up offers something a summary cannot replace: detailed comparisons, calculators and tools, original data, local services, product pages, pricing pages and anything the searcher needs to act on. Brand searches are also largely unaffected, which is one reason brand building matters more now.

How to respond to Google AI Overviews

1. Find out which of your queries trigger AI Overviews. Search your top 20 to 30 keywords manually and note which show an overview and whether you are cited. Check again every month.

2. Rebalance your content plan. Write fewer thin explainers and more content with depth, experience and data. Point informational articles clearly towards the service and product pages that convert.

3. Make your pages easy to cite. Lead with direct answers, use question headings and state specific facts. Our guide on how to write content AI assistants quote covers the method.

4. Add structured data that matches the page. It is not required for AI Overviews, but it helps machines understand your pages across search and other AI assistants. See schema markup for AI search.

5. Build brand demand. People who already know your brand search for it by name, and those searches are rarely absorbed by a summary. Consistent mentions across the web also help AI systems recognise your brand.

6. Measure leads, not only clicks. If clicks fall but enquiries hold or rise, the traffic you lost was mostly people who would not have converted.

How to measure AI Overviews in Search Console

Google states that traffic from sites appearing in AI features, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, is included in the overall search traffic in Search Console, under the Web search type in the Performance report. In the standard report there is no filter that separates AI Overview clicks from regular clicks.

In June 2026 Google began rolling out separate generative AI performance reports in Search Console, showing impressions, pages, countries and devices for AI features. At launch they were available only to a subset of sites and did not include clicks, so check whether your property has them.

In practice, the clearest sign of AI Overview impact is a pattern in the Performance report: impressions holding or rising on informational queries while click through rate falls. In Google Analytics 4, AI Overview clicks appear as ordinary google organic traffic, so watch engagement and conversions from organic search alongside clicks. Visits from other assistants can be tracked separately, as we show in how to track AI traffic in GA4.

What this looks like on a real account

For a drone light show company, we focused the keyword strategy on commercial searches by occasion and city, the kind of query buyers use when they are ready to book, rather than broad informational terms. Over six months, organic traffic grew 320% and website enquiries grew 210%, and in one recent month AI assistants sent 23 visitors to the site, from zero before the work began. See the drone light show SEO case study.

Frequently asked questions

You can limit what Google shows using nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex. These controls also affect how your pages appear in regular results, so use them carefully. Blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from AI Overviews, because it controls Gemini training and grounding in other Google products, not Search.

No. Google says no special schema or AI specific markup is required. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Structured data that matches your visible content still helps machines understand the page.

Yes. AI Overviews have supported Hindi in India since their launch in August 2024, and AI Mode now supports Hindi and several other Indian languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Bengali and Marathi.

The simplest method is to search your target queries and check the links shown beside the overview. Some sites also have access to Google's newer generative AI performance reports in Search Console, which list the pages that appeared in AI features.

Yes. AI Overviews draw their sources from pages Google has already indexed and trusts, so traditional SEO is how you get into that pool. Commercial, local and transactional searches, which bring in most leads, are also less affected than simple informational ones.
